Alla Prima Oil Painting Workshop Series at River Tree Arts, Kennebunk, Maine

“Alla prima” is an Italian phrase that translates to “at once” or “at first attempt”. For oil painters, this approach is all about creating a painting in one sitting. In this class we will explore the history, materials and techniques of oil painting in the alla prima style. Working from direct observation of the still life, we will complete three paintings in oils, one at each sitting, building speed and confidence as we go.
This class is for beginner or intermediate painters with some oil painting experience. A background in drawing may be helpful but is not required.

Introduction To Oil Painting at River Tree Arts, Kennebunk, Maine
Mondays, 10am-1pm
(6 weeks) September 19 – October 31, 2022 (no class Monday October 10)
You will be introduced to oil painting materials while gaining hands-on experience mixing colors, painting on canvas, and properly cleaning up. Sarah will guide you in a traditional, layered approach to oil painting. Working from the still life, we will study value and color relationships to create beautiful compositions of our own.
This is an adult class for beginner and intermediate painters who are trying out oil paint for the first time. A background in drawing may be helpful but is not required.
Please bring a drawing pad to class (11” x 14” or larger), along with your preferred drawing tool. Here is a supply list that students can purchase prior to the first class.

Welcome back! In this follow-up session to Introduction to Oil Painting and the Watercolor Workshop, we will build on our technical skills while exploring personal style and interests through independent projects. Sarah will provide a weekly still life arrangement with seasonal items from her garden, or you may choose to work from your own materials or photography. We will continue to render form and space through value study and color mixing, plus explore mark making as a vehicle to create emotion, movement and textural interest. We will also address compositional strategies that can elevate a painting. You will work alongside each other at your own pace, and be given encouragement and constructive feedback in group critiques. Prior to the first class, Sarah will be in touch to discuss your individual goals for the session and will guide
you accordingly. You can expect to walk away from this class further inspired and with work that you are proud of — paintings reflective of you.
